How Neuromodulators Work

Neuromodulators temporarily reduce muscle activity and smooth out the skin at the area of the injection. Neuromodulators only work on wrinkles caused by muscle movement, often referred to as expression lines. During this 10-20 minute procedure, Dr. Gornichec injects the chosen product under the skin using an extremely fine and precise needle. The extent of the discomfort is usually limited to a brief pinch. However, patients concerned by pain or needles may request a numbing cream. There is no downtime after the procedure and patients will begin to see results within a 5-7 days of the injections.

How Long Do Results Last?

Treatment lasts about three to five months on average depending on dosage and product. However, the positive effects increase with consistent use. Neuromodulators are temporary however, so treatment will have to be maintained or wrinkles and fine lines will eventually reappear.

It is possible to build antibodies to neuromodulators and those individual with antibodies will no longer respond or have a reduced response to further injection treatments.

Possible Side Effects of Treatment

Most patients have few to no side effects after injections, however, a small percentage of individuals may experience eyelid drooping after frown line treatment or brow dropping after forehead treatment. These side effects usually from migration of product to muscles close to injection sites. They can improve over time and there are treatment options if this does occur. Discuss options with your injector should asymmetry or abnormal muscle weakness occur after your injections. Other possible side effects include discomfort at the injections site, headache, fatigue, vision issues, and the potential for an allergic reaction.

Still have questions?

See some of our most frequently asked questions:

  • What age should you start Botox?

The best time to start Botox is whenever you begin to see any fine lines or wrinkles appear on the skin. This normally happens around a person's late 20's or early 30's. Even faint lines can be a signal that a wrinkle is about to form in that area of the skin.

  • Who shouldn't get Botox?

People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a neurological disease shouldn't use Botox. Because Botox doesn't work for all wrinkles, check with a doctor first. You shouldn't have Botox shots if you're allergic to cow's milk protein.

  • Do I need Botox or fillers?

If you're considering Botox vs. fillers, always opt for Botox to smooth fine lines of expression and prevent deep-set wrinkles from forming. On the other hand, if you want to add volume to the lines at rest (aka muscles that aren't contracting), fillers are the solution.
