Laser Hair Removal in Hot Springs

For many men and women, daily and weekly shaving or waxing is a constant, annoying, and often uncomfortable way of life. There’s the wasted time, razor burns, ingrown hairs, and painful hair pulls that all add up to a ritual no one enjoys. Luckily, there is a quick, effective, and safe procedure that can end the grind…permanently.

Laser hair removal uses concentrated beams of light that are absorbed by pigmented (dark colored) hair. The hair follicles are destroyed at the source while the surrounding skin is left undamaged. The result is a long-lasting, often permanent solution to unsightly hair growth.

We always recommended that a small hidden patch of skin be test treated with the device during your free consultation to see how your skin responds to this type of therapy. We are then able to customize and improve the energy settings for subsequent treatments to increase the efficacy of the therapy.

Benefits of Laser Hair Removal

Beyond the most obvious benefit of hair growth reduction or elimination in the treated areas, modern lasers have become faster, more precise, and less painful.

What To Expect During Laser Hair Removal

Preparation is important for laser hair removal. Shaving is fine, but waxing and electrolysis should not be performed on the area being treated for about six weeks prior to the laser procedure. Patients should avoid excessive sun exposure prior to and during the program duration with appropriate sun screen utilization. Patients should also avoid utilizing UV tanning beds and use of spray tan material prior to and during the program duration.

Prior to the procedure, we may prescribe topical anesthetic. This is often unnecessary but can be helpful for those with sensitivity issues. The area of the body being treated will be shaved and covered with a cooling gel. Adjustments can be made to the laser based on the patient’s skin color, hair type, the area being treated, and more. We utilize the newest technology available which allows us to treat large areas in just minutes as well as all skin tones and types. The procedure itself usually taking less than 15-20 minutes.

Recovery from Laser Hair Removal

Patients will have no downtime, however, they may rarely experience some swelling and discomfort which can be mitigated with cooling lotions, gels, and ice packs. This discomfort usually lasts less than 12 hours. Over the next several weeks, patients are encouraged to stay out of the sun, or if they can’t avoid a sunny area, to wear protective clothing and use a high SPF sunscreen. During this time, hair in the treated areas will begin to fall out and portions of the hair follicles in the treated areas will not regrow. Hair follicles follow a cyclic growth pattern, meaning that at any period of time only about 20-30% of hair follicles in a given area are in the “growth” phase. This means that repeat treatments are necessary to catch as many of the follicles in the growth phase as possible to achieve long term hair reduction. Subsequent sessions will be scheduled approximately 4 to 6 weeks apart.

Risks are usually minor and may include discomfort, swelling, and redness. Changes in skin color of the treated area, hyperpigmentation, blistering and scarring are possible but extremely rare.

Still have questions?

See some of our most frequently asked questions:

  • Can hair be permanently removed by laser?

The short answer is yes. There are millions of hair follicles in any one region of skin and some of these follicles will not be destroyed completely by laser utilization. Partially damaged follicles produce finer and lighter hair shafts, possible multiple hair shafts per follicle or the shaft may grow under the skin. Some follicles may be completely undamaged and regrow unchanged from previous until it enters a more susceptible growth phase.  If hair growth persists in a certain area than wait 4-6 weeks and get a subsequent treatment until eradication occurs to the degree that you desire.

  • How painful is laser hair removal?

Though there is some discomfort, it's often less than people imagine. Laser hair removal targets your hair follicles with a very hot laser, but you won't feel this heat or any burning. Instead, you might feel a sensation similar to having an elastic band snapped against your skin. If uncomfortable then inform your provider and they can often reduce the intensity to a more tolerable level without a reduction in efficacy.

  • Are there areas that won’t respond to laser hair removal?

Some areas respond better than others. The scalp and male facial regions and somewhat resistant. It is felt to be secondary to frequent shaving in this area resulting in a thicker hair shaft and associated follicle that is resistant to light effects. Some areas the follicle may be deeper placed in the tissue and need a different intensity or wavelength to eradicate. Inform your provider of resistant areas so the treatment protocol can be adapted on subsequent sessions.
