Dermal Fillers in Hot Springs

Dermal fillers are gel-like substances that are injected under the skin to restore volume and smooth wrinkles and folds of the face and neck. While neuromodulators reduce and relax the muscle activity that causes wrinkles, facial fillers address fine lines and wrinkles caused by sagging or a loss of volume in the skin, also known as static wrinkles. Dermal fillers produce a more youthful look by softening these creases, enhancing natural contours, and stimulating collagen production. Results are usually noticeable immediately after receiving your injections.

Dermal fillers can be used to:

  • Smooth out lines around nose and mouth (ie marionette lines, smile lines, and parentheses lines)

  • Enhance and restore volume to sunken cheeks or temples

  • Diminish vertical lip lines
  • Plump and enhance the lips

  • Smooth out chin creases

  • Fill in or soften the look of recessed scars

  • Improve the symmetry of facial features

How Dermal Fillers Work

Dermal fillers use a variety of FDA approved natural or synthetic derived substances that plump and smooth the skin. Not every type of filler is right for every concern, so Dr. Gornichec will guide you through which option is best suited for the results you are looking for. Before treatment, the area will be cleaned, and a topical anesthetic may be administered for numbness. Most fillers also contain lidocaine, a mild anesthetic, which helps to minimize any discomfort during the procedure itself. A precise amount of filler is then injected at strategic points under the skin.

How long do results last?

Depending on the type of filler used, the area of treatment, and the patient themselves, results can last anywhere from six months to several years. Generally speaking, the denser the product is and the more deeply it is injected, the longer the results will last, although this is not a hard and fast rule. Results will most likely need to be maintained with subsequent treatments that can adjust the amount of filler and the techniques used to ensure optimal and natural looking results.

Possible Side Effects of Treatment

The risks associated with dermal fillers are minimal, and most patients have few to no side effects after their injections. However, a small percentage of individuals may experience mild bruising or swelling, skin itching, or a rash, but these are temporary reactions and should subside in the days following treatment. The filler may also cause the formation of tiny bumps under the skin, which should dissipate with time. It is important to tell your doctor about any medications you are taking and any allergies or skin conditions you have before treatment, as these can jeopardize your safety and results. Aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, and blood thinners can increase the likelihood of bruising and need to be disclosed. You will be able to go back to your regular activities immediately after treatment, but you may be asked to take the day off from strenuous activity and exercise.

Still have questions?

See some of our most frequently asked questions:

  • What is a filler?

Dermal fillers are gel-like substances injected under the skin. Dermal fillers are meant to create a smoother or fuller appearance, or both. The FDA regulates dermal fillers as medical devices.

  • How long do fillers last?

3 Months to >5 Yearrs.  They are temporary but at the same time, they are long-lasting. Different brands and formulations of fillers last for different amounts of time, but when you get injected with fillers, you can expect reversible HA fillers to last 3-15 months, synthetic fillers like sculptra can last a few years and some synthetic brands of FDA fillers are seeing 5-9 years duration.

  • Are fillers better than Botox?

Botox is a neuromodulator like Xeomin and Dysport that relaxes muscles. This may reduce the ability to create minor wrinkles in the face and neck.  Fillers are used to replace lost volume or augment volume where desired. The overall effect of both, however, should be smoother, plumper looking facial contours. With that, your goals will also dictate which treatment you should try.
